Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was getting ready out the door, I stumbled and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely late for school.
I flustered. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was just as bad. was a catastrophe. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
